My name is Helen and I run Endoyoga - Yoga For Endometriosis. I am a certified yoga teacher and therapist in MediYoga, (certified at IMY (Institute in MediYoga) a 2-year training), certiied nutrition adviser and also am educated in anatomy & physiology (Basic medicine).
I´ve had endometriosis for over 20 years and want with this website to help other women who are in this painful illness. It took 17 years for me to get a diagnosis and finally get to know what was happening in my body. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for women affected that it will take many years before they finally get a diagnosis. The treatments available today is such as painkillers, hormone treatments and surgeries. These treatments have not suited me very well and I have often felt that endometriosis is something I simply must learn to live with.
But having been burned out for a long time and having had endometriosis for many years, I went to try yoga. I needed something that touched more deeply within myself. When I came in contact with Kundalini Yoga on IMY I felt it was a form that suited me very well. After one course, I scheduled an appointment with the teacher Goran Boll for a yoga-therapy session. I did not know so much what it was about before our meeting, but felt that something very important was about to happen in my life! I started doing a yogaset for 40 days. Quickly I felt changes in me in a physical, mental and emotional way. I got a calmness and balance, that I really needed at the time. Since then I´ve been practising yoga almost every day. It has become a natural part of my life. If I skip yoga one day I feel a little bit weird. Then it feels as if something is missing and like an out-of-tune violin.
After attending the training and becoming a yoga therapist, I began seriously trying to understand my illness and find out ways that could suit me, to achieve a healthier lifestyle. I had tried some yoga sets for women with menstrual disorders and hormonal imbalances, but found that many exercises hurted too much. I created my own yoga sets designed for women who have endometriosis, pelvic pain, period pain and PMS and found that yoga does not have to be challenging to have a good effect on us. I also discovered what diet and other lifestyle changes could be made to help me feel better. I felt that these symptoms and diseases, many women with pelvic pain have, had some common ground and that it should be possible to reach this target group with the same method. I noticed that the yoga sets worked very well for me. They gave me great energy, strength and positivity! With the help of breathing, and certain yoga exercises, I could also get through the moments that were still painful. Along with a better diet and exercise, I felt that my pain subsided and I had more energy and began to relax from the disease. It was not so central anymore, and if the pain would show up, which it does not do very often, I have my tricks to ward it off.
In my illness, I am so grateful that I have yoga which helped me to feel better. Sometimes I make a 40-day therapy session, to see what happens. Sometimes I do a session that fits my needs at the moment. It's so exciting with yoga, what it can do for us! Maybe it's not always easy to understand exactly why and how it affects. But it's also what makes it so exciting! Many physical problems have completely disappeared for me during these years. My symptoms of endometriosis have almost disappeared and I have become much fitter and more aware about what my needs are.
Yoga for me is not just about yoga exercises and meditations. It is also about the big picture in life. Lifestyle, diet, exercise, friends, family, love and more. What yoga has done for me, besides helping me in my illness, is that like an onion, peel away those outer layers to reach the inner core of myself. Being true to myself, choosing the right paths and break patterns. I feel it has given me a greater awareness, enriched my life greatly and helped me to get in the right direction in life. I have strengthened my intuition and trust what my mind and body signals what is best for me.
It's an amazing journey I have made throughout these years. From being in a terrible pain to have a beautiful and functional life today. Observing the changes over time and trusting what I have done, has been exciting. It took me a lot of discipline, patience and focus. But it has certainly been worth it!
Today I have yoga classes, workshops, private yoga sessions and I also have special programs for women who have painful periods, pelvic pain and PMS. These programs you´ll be able to find here. I´m educated in nutrition and often include diet in my yoga programs for my clients and students. I´m also educated in anatomy and physiology.
It´s time for you to go on that journey. To peel off those layers to reach your true potential. You can do it!
